Good enough for grandma...

Hickory Farms

Hickoryfarms12 07

When I was very young, I would help my grandma pick out boxes of meats and cheeses from the Hickory Farms catalog.

I found it very exotic. To think that this mysterious farm would send such smoky treats and tiny raspberry candies to you.

She would scrawl, in her wavering, tremor-inflected hand, the names of her children, her grandchildren, certain cousins, near the particular gift box.

This year I decided to send Hickory Farms boxes to a lucky select few of my friends.

If it was good enough for grandma...

... it's good enough for me! Jason, you give the best edible gifts. First the shrimp cocktail for my housewarming party, and now this. Praise the Gourd and pass the beef stick.

I think that Beef Stick should be designated our national Mystery Meat. Yum, but don't check the ingredients!

Ordering Hickory Farms has unleashed a flood of memories of Grandma Wilson. By the time I encountered her, she was ancient and mossy; her hands were alabaster coated in a protective layer of Dove soap; she was as light as pumice. This was when there was a lot of snow--over my head, in a snowmobile suit, braving the wilds to grandmother's house we go where the snowdrifts were up to the windows and the heater was ticking on--i drifted in and out of consciousness in those days, baked apples and her slippers shushing on the lino.
